DAMASCUS – Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry asserted Monday Cairo’s backing for the Syrian leadership, government and people in countering the impact of the devastating quake that hit the northwest areas, leaving thousands of people dead.
At a joint press conference with his Syrian counterpart Faisal Miqdad here, Shoukry reiterated Egypt’s full readiness to offer all possible resources to extend humanitarian aid to the Syrian people in coordination with the Syrian government to face the impacts of the major quake.
He said the main objective behind the Damascus visit is humanitarian in the first place and to convey the solidarity of Egypt’s leadership and people to the Syrian side.
Shoukry also explained that in such ordeal the countries should be linked by humanitarian ties and it is the focus of the current phase.
Egypt has extended more than 1,500 tons of humanitarian aid to Syria, noting that aid efforts will be intensified by Egypt, he said.
The Egyptian top diplomat briefed his Syrian opposite on the efforts exerted by other countries under the UN sponsorship to ease the burdens on the Syrian citizens, asserting that Egypt would continue such necessary humanitarian action at this critical time.
He also conveyed to Syrian President Bassar Al Assad a message of solidarity and condolences from President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, asserting the depth of ties binding the two peoples.
Shoukry also pointed out that Egypt will continuously work to counter challenges facing the Syrian people and is looking forward to see Syria overcome such catastrophic impacts of the quake.
