CAIRO – Egyptian Minister of Local Development Mahmoud Shaarawy said the government is racing against time to implement the new garbage collection system so as to provide safe dumps and end the phenomena of burning wastes, noting that the total cost of the national plan to develop the waste management system hit LE12 bn.
These remarks were made during the minister’s participation in a the parliamentary local administration committee meeting on Monday to discuss measures taken by the government to develop the institutional framework of the National Solid Waste Management Program (NSWMP). The committee is chaired by parliament secretary Mohamed Abul Enein.
He said the governorates of Greater Cairo (Cairo, Giza and Qalubiya) along with Alexandria are responsible for 47 percent of the state’s garbage, while the Delta governorates represent 34 per cent and the remaining governorates’s share is 19 per cent.
The minister also said the ministry has cooperated with other ministries to implement NSWMP through establishing collection and mobile stations as well as closing the random dumps and setting up recycling projects.
