CAIRO – Egypt considers Senegal a strategic partner in the West African region, Foreign Affairs and Emigration Minister Badr Abdelatty said.
He stressed that Egypt’s appreciate historic relations with the African country, citing growing bilateral ties and shared views on regional and international issues.
The minister’s remarks came during a meeting with Senegal’s Minister of African Integration and Foreign Affairs Yassine Fall, during his current visit to Dakar.
The meeting focused on exploring ways to enhance bilateral cooperation across political, economic, and development sectors.
They also discussed preparations for the upcoming session of the Joint Committee between the two countries, to be held in Dakar, with the aim of achieving concrete and actionable outcomes that would strengthen collaboration across all areas of mutual interest.
Abdelatty noted that he was accompanied by a large delegation of Egyptian businessmen and representatives of public and private Egyptian companies during the visit.
He stated that the delegation includes companies operating in agriculture, industry, fertilizers, food products, construction, infrastructure, pharmaceuticals, energy, and IT.
He also affirmed Egypt’s full readiness to support Senegal’s “Vision 2050” by transferring expertise, building capacities, and expanding avenues of economic and investment cooperation, underlining the need to work for increasing trade volume between the two countries.
Abdelatty also praised Senegal’s approach to maximizing the use of its local resources and promoting local manufacturing.
He voiced the Egyptian public and private sector companies’ keenness to provide technical support and share the necessary expertise in this field.
The two ministers also reviewed developments in the Sahel and West Africa.
Abdelatty underscored the need to continue coordination and cooperation to confront the growing threats posed by terrorist groups in the region and prevent their expansion, as such threats directly endanger regional stability.
The foreign minister also reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to maintaining peace and security across Africa, pointing to its active participation in most UN peacekeeping missions on the continent.
He also expressed Egypt’s readiness to enhance cooperation with Senegal in combating terrorism and organized crime in West Africa and the Sahel region, through the development of a comprehensive approach that includes military, security, and ideological dimensions, in parallel with supporting development efforts.
