The General Authority for the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone), in co-operation with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), announced on Thursday the launch of the National Clean Hydrogen Programme – aiming at accelerating the country’s transition towards a competitive green hydrogen-based economy.
The programme is set to deliver a comprehensive package of activities designed to enhance Egypt’s readiness for green hydrogen investments.
These include preparing pre-feasibility and feasibility studies for priority projects, providing technical support in policy development, enhancing institutional and national capacities, and supporting the establishment of a Centre of Excellence for Green Hydrogen at SCZone’s Sokhna headquarters.
The initiative forms part of UNIDO’s Global Clean Hydrogen Programme, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), which covers 10 countries, with Egypt playing a pivotal role.
The programme will be carried out through an integrated institutional partnership framework involving key national and international stakeholders in the energy and industrial development sectors.
A steering committee has been established to oversee implementation, comprising representatives from SCZone, UNIDO as the executing agency, the Ministry of Environment as the national focal point for the GEF, as well as the ministries of electricity and renewable energy and industry, in coordination with the Supreme Council for Green Hydrogen.
The structure is intended to ensure effective institutional co-ordination and alignment with national priorities.
