The recent release of 1,100 pre-trial detainees in Egypt has drawn attention from the West, National Council for Human Rights (NCHR) said on Thursday.
NCHR spokesman Ezzat Ibrahim said a statement released on Wednesday by the US Department of State commended the “remarkable progress” Egypt has achieved in human rights, thus restored the prestige of Egypt as a country moving forward with the issue of human rights since 2014, Ibrahim told Extra News local TV channel during a phone interview.
Progress on human rights under the leadership of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi should be greeted with much acclaim, Ibrahim said.
Egypt’s parliament has passed many laws human rights and has made recommendations to be enforced soon as the outcome of the first homegrown National Strategy for Human Rights launched by President Sisi last year, and an ongoing national political dialogue called by the presdient during an annual Egyptian Family Iftar banquet in April.
Spokesman for the US State Department Ned Price welcomed reports on Wednesday of the pardon granted to former MP Ziad el-Eleimy, who was freed Monday.
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken tweeted that Egypt’s progress in human rights with strengthening ties between both countries.
