CAIRO – Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has voiced Egypt’s support for the role played by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in offering basic services for Palestinian refugees.
During a meeting with UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini in Cairo, the president described the UN relief agency as the only mechanism that shoulders a humanitarian responsibility towards the Palestinian people, especially in the areas of education and health.
Sisi voiced Egypt’s keenness on staying in touch with all regional and international parties to provide the necessary support for UNRWA amid the Covid-19 pandemic, Presidential Spokesman Bassam Rady said.
Egypt is ready to support some projects carried out by the UN agency to ease the suffering of the Palestinian people, especially through the Egyptian initiative to reconstruct the Gaza Strip, Sisi noted.
Lazzarini, for his part, reviewed the role played by UNRWA in support of the Palestinian people and the difficult circumstances they face in view of regional and international developments.
He praised Egypt’s efforts to mobilize international support for the agency to continue its role in supporting Palestinian refugees.
Lazzarini also lauded Egypt’s keenness on improving the living conditions of the Palestinian people, especially in the Gaza Strip, citing Egypt’s allocation of $500 million to reconstruct the coastal enclave.
