SHARQYIA – Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi attended Monday a ceremony marking  ‘Labor Day’ at the Eastern Sugar Factory in Sharqyia governorate.

The celebration is attended by several Senior officials, Ministers and representatives of workers in all sectors from the boards of directors of public unions.

As part of the celebration, President Sisi expected to inaugurate 5 new industrial projects within the framework of the “Start” initiative to support the Egyptian industry

President Sisi also expected to honor a number of distinguished and veterans’ Egyptian workers by awarding them the Work Medal of the first class, and the Medal of Excellence for their efforts.

Speaking to the gathering, chairman of the Egyptian Trade Union Federation (ETUF) Mohamed Gobran praised “wise” decisions and policies of President Sisi. That has greatly helped alleviate the burden on citizens in the face of global price hikes that resulted from huge regional and international challenges, Gobran noted.
He touched upon what he called “decisive decisions” by Sisi in favor of the working class and the limited-income brackets. One such decision was to increase the minimum wages, Gobran cited. He also pointed to Sisi’s decisions to up the tax exemption limit and pensions. A cost of living allowance has also been endorsed by the president, who also upgraded subsidy and social protection by 48 percent, said the ETUF chairman.
A documentary was then played showing the history of Labor Day celebrations in the world, as well as Egypt’s efforts to support some 30 million workers on its lands.
The documentary also highlighted the presidential initiatives that aimed to support workers, atop of which “Decent Life” and the workers’ emergency fund.
Manpower Minister Hassan Shehata said the Labor Day ceremony is taking place at the factory of the Eastern Sugar Company, which represents a model of successful cooperation and partnership between the public and private sectors.
With capital worth 1.5 billion pounds, the Eastern Sugar Company also represents a good example of cooperation between Egyptian and Arab financial institutions, the minister further said.
He put the total workforce of the company at about 16,000 direct and indirect workers; including 15,000 farmers to cultivate some 60,000 feddans of sugar beet annually.
Shehata added that advanced mechanical cultivation is applied over 25,000 more feddans.
The company produces 400,000 tons of sugar every year, the minister said, noting that this meets 15 percent of the local consumption. Sugar surplus is exported to Arab and European countries, he made it clear.
Shehata said that his Ministry is following directives of President Sisi, especially those related to integrating persons with disabilities into the labor market, protecting irregular employment, training youth and upgrading technical and industrial education.
