President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has given the go-ahead for the immediate launch of a national project to build a leather tanning factory which will be the first and largest such facility in the Middle East region and Africa.
The projected plant will also be in the foremost in introducing advanced manufacturing technology that permits the recycling of leather waste and turning it into organic fertilisers and environment-friendly products in partnership with Italian expertise.
President Sisi’s go-head for this national project came during his meeting Monday with Director General of the National Service Projects Authority for the Armed Forces Major General Walid Abul-Magd with the participation of the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Piel Colour Company for Tanning and Finishing Leather, Hisham al-Gazzar, and Chairman of Showroom for Trade Sayed Farag, Presidency Spokesman Ambassador Bassam Radi said.
The presidential directives also called for the provision of all modern machines and industrial technologies deemed necessary for the projected plant to help qualify Egypt as the region’s leading country in leather tanning industry and in the acquisition of related technological capabilities, Spokesman Radi said.
During the meeting, President Sisi was briefed on all the components of the giant project and the conclusions of relevant feasibility studies, the spokesman said, adding that the briefing indicated that the project will be integrated with other leather industry facilities and that it will contribute to promoting the safe disposal of waste through recycling.
As such, he said, the projected plant will operate in accordance with world health and environmental standards in the establishment of new industrial zones. Furthermore, the project, he added, will optimise its economic returns since it will recycle the industrial waste.
The project will be integrated with other industrial areas in the field of leather nationwide and will contribute to the safe disposal of waste resulting from leather industries by recycling them, in line with international standards in achieving the health and environmental requirements of the new industrial zones as well as its economic returns by making the maximum use of these wastes.
In a related context, efforts to develop the leather industry in Egypt, such as shoes and others, were presented in integration with the leather tanning factory project, with the aim of expanding the localisation of this industry in Egypt.
This comes while taking into consideration what this proposal will contribute to placing Egypt on the global map of the leather industry, especially in light of the competitive advantages this sector enjoys that qualify it to be a centre for the leather industry and its products in the region.
