Prime Minister, Moustafa Madbouli, continued on Sunday his regular meetings to follow up the availability of strategic commodities in markets, preparations for the current season of local wheat procurement, and the distribution system of fertilizers.
The meeting was attended by Minister of Supply and Internal Trade, Sherif Farouk, and minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, Alaa Eddin Farouk.
The prime minister emphasised that the main goal of these periodic reviews is to ensure a safe stock of essential goods for reassuring timeframes, contributing to market stability and price balance, especially amid current regional events affecting supply chains and financing. He also highlighted the importance of monitoring fertiliser availability and governance of its support system to meet local needs, expand Egyptian agriculture, and boost productivity.
For his part, the minister of supply confirmed that the strategic reserve of basic commodities is sufficient for up to six months, with some items nearing a year’s supply, reflecting stability in stock levels. He noted that the ministry aims to secure around 5 million tons of wheat during the current harvest season as part of the national food security strategy.
The minister of agriculture presented the ministry’s plan to maximise benefits from the 2026 local wheat procurement season, aiming to reduce import gaps and secure the state’s strategic needs. He stressed incentivizing farmers through competitive procurement prices and additional measures to enhance efficiency and oversight, including expanding collection points and activating cooperative systems.
The meeting also reviewed measures to strengthen governance of subsidised fertiliserdistribution, encourage modern technological tools in production and distribution, and ensure fair allocation through direct field monitoring.
