Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to closely monitoring national electricity grid projects as part of efforts to enhance the efficiency of the sector and ensure a reliable power supply for households and development projects.
Madbouli made the remark during a visit on Sunday to the West Alexandria Control Centre, operated by the Alexandria Electricity Distribution Company, in New Borg El Arab City, at the start of an inspection tour of Alexandria Governorate. The premier was accompanied by several senior officials.
The prime minister highlighted the state’s ongoing efforts to modernise, strengthen and expand the unified national electricity grid, while adopting advanced technologies to improve service quality for citizens.
The West Control Centre was established as part of a broader plan to develop the governorate’s electricity network in cooperation with the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Alexandria Governor Ayman Attia said .
He added that the facility supports meter governance, the expansion of smart metering systems and the digitalisation of customer services.
Attia added that the centre serves as a strategic hub for investment projects and industrial zones in western Alexandria, including the Free Zone, Borg El Arab Industrial Zone and the Merghem Industrial Complex.
Premier Madbouli toured the control and monitoring room and received a briefing from Ihab El Feqqui, Chairman of the Alexandria Electricity Distribution Company.
The centre monitors and controls loads and voltages across substations and distribution networks throughout western Alexandria, El Feqqui explained.
The facility serves nearly one million subscribers and covers a wide range of residential areas, villages and tourist resorts along the Mediterranean coastal road from kilometre 21 to kilometre67, he said.
The centre also supports major development projects, including Sharyan Al-Amal, Bashayer Al-Kheir, Tahya Misr and the Technological University.
El Feqqui added that the automated control system is currently being upgraded across 12 substations, 56 distribution stations, 100 smart panels and 50 medium-voltage capacitor units.
He noted that 5,000 smart meters have already been installed under the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system as part of a wider project to deploy 300,000 smart meters across western Alexandria. The initiative aims to monitor consumption, reduce losses, improve network efficiency and shorten outage response times, ensuring a dependable electricity supply for industrial, tourism and residential users.
Regarding operational capabilities, El Feqqui said the centre can carry out remote switching operations, rapidly detect faults, isolate affected sections and restore power through smart control panels, while also implementing emergency response plans.
Madbouli also inspected the site’s solar energy facilities. El Feqqui explained that the company has installed four rooftop solar power stations at the West Control Centre and nearby company-owned buildings to expand the use of renewable energy, reduce carbon emissions and support environmental sustainability.
