CAIRO – Egypt’s Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli chaired a meeting Thursday to follow up on efforts made within the State’s strategic plan to expand the establishment of seawater desalination plants.

During the meeting, attended by a number of ministers and high-level officials, Madbouli stressed the State’s keenness on expanding the establishment of seawater desalination plants within the upcoming phase, especially in the coastal cities.

The premier, meanwhile, issued directives to form a technical committee tasked with receiving bids from the
companies seeking to take on seawater desalination projects.

The meeting also tackled the current status of the seawater desalination stations, said Cabinet Spokesman Nader Saad.

The country has established 82 desalination plants, with a combined capacity of 917,000 cubic metres per day, the spokesman quoted the ministers as saying during the meeting.

Efforts are under way to establish 14 new stations, which will increase the total production capacity to 1.4 million cubic metres per day, said the spokesman.

The meeting further discussed the 2020-2025 plan to expand in establishing seawater desalination projects, which aim to provide water needs for fulfilling urban development goals, he noted.
