Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli attended the signing of the nuclear fuel purchase order for the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant, along with a new Comprehensive Cooperation Program between Egypt and Russia’s Rosatom.
The ceremony took place at the El Dabaa site with the participation of Electricity and Renewable Energy Minister Mahmoud Essmat, Nuclear Power Plants Authority Chairman Sherif Helmy, and Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev.
The event coincided with the installation of the reactor pressure vessel for the plant’s first unit, an event joined virtually by President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The signing aligns with Egypt’s annual Nuclear Energy Day, observed on November 19 to mark the 2015 agreement that set the foundation for the El Dabaa project.
This year’s celebrations come as the project enters a pivotal phase with the installation of the VVER-1200 Generation III+ reactor pressure vessel and the formal order for the first core’s fuel.
Egypt and Russia also agreed on broader cooperation covering nuclear technology, medical radioisotopes, technical applications such as 3D printing, and communications.
It is noteworthy that the El Dabaa Nuclear Plant remains central to Egypt’s strategy to diversify its energy mix, support sustainable development, and strengthen national capabilities in peaceful nuclear technology.
