Egypt’s Planning Ministry launched – in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme – the first round of consultations on a proposed initiative of “decent life for Africa to be capable of adaptation for climate change.”
This falls within the framework of preparations for the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) which Egypt will host in November.
During a video-conference speech on Wednesday, Planning Minister Hala Saeed said Africa is deeply affected by climate change and will continue to suffer from its impact, especially in rural areas over rising temperature and sea level as well as changes in rainfalls.
She said this poses several challenges to agriculture and food security, thus hindering development gains.
She noted that the presidential initiative of Decent Life aims mainly at improving the life quality in rural areas with an aim to “leave no one behind”.
The initiative targets 58 per cent of Egyptians living in 4,500 villages at a total cost of LE800 billion.
She said Decent Life initiative adopts a mechanism taking into consideration the climate dimension, therefore it is an epitome to be followed for improving the life quality in rural areas.
