CAIRO – Minister of Planning and Economic Development Hala el Said launched the Egyptian Governorates Competitiveness Index (EGCI), with crucial information on potential investment opportunities in each governorate.
The EGCI is the first comprehensive and multidimensional index reflecting the aspects of an inclusive and long-term economy in the Egyptian governorates, the minister said.
This came at a meeting attended by Minister of Local Development Hesham Amna, USAID Acting Mission Director Margaret Sancho, Executive Secretary of ESCWA Rola Dashti and a host of governors, officials and lawmakers.
The index was co-prepared by the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics, the Cabinet’s Information and Decision Support Center, the Egyptian National Competitiveness Council, ESCWA as well USAID, the minister said.
The index seeks to shed light on the suitable investment environments in each governorate, in addition to the regional integration process to reinforce the competitiveness of each governorate, she added.
Said noted that the index aims to identify the advantages and competitiveness of the Egyptian governorates in order to fill in the related development gaps.
It will act as a tool to assist in making decisions on the allocation of local resources to achieve a balanced development and will also serve as a useful tool for the private sector to make investment decisions in governorates based on the competitive environment measured by the index, the minister went on to say.
The Egyptian Governorates Competitiveness Index (EGCI) will provide crucial insights for decision-makers to adopt tailored economic policies for each governorate, increase private investment into governorates’ competitive economic sectors, and allocate additional resources to marginalized ones.
It will incentivize governorates to improve their competitiveness ranking by fostering a positive competitive environment among them.
