Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has called for the formation of a committee from the secretaries general of Palestinian factions to complete the dialogue on the various issues and files that were discussed by the “Alamein meeting” with the chief aim of ending division and achieving national unity among Palestinians.
Addressing the meeting of secretaries general, held under Egypt’s auspices in the New Alamaein City on Sunday, Abbas urged the proposed committee to immediately start completing the mission and come back with the agreements it reaches, the Middle East News Agency (MENA) reported.
He also voiced hopes for holding a meeting soon for the factions in Cairo, to declare to the Palestinian people the end of division and the restoration of Palestinian national unity.
The meeting in New Alamein City is “a first and significant step to complete the dialogue, which I hope will achieve the desired goals soo.” the Palestinian leader was quoted as saying by MENA.
The Palestinian leader also thanked President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and the Egyptian state for hosting the meeting of the secretaries general of Palestinian factions that was held under the auspices of Egypt in the New Alamein City on Sunday.
He highlighted President Sisi’ keenness to find joint efforts crowned with success on the path to ending division and achieving Palestinian national unity.
Abbas also thanked sisterly and friendly countries for their efforts, as well as the delegations participating in the Alamein meeting for their positive efforts to reach such a comprehensive national agreement that would restore to the Palestinian cause the consideration it deserves.
The Alamein meeting was called to discuss the developments on the Palestinian arena and ways to restore national unity and end division, amid the colossal challenges facing the Palestinian cause.
Participants in the meeting and their accompanying delegations held preparatory bilateral and collective meetings on Saturday, and stressed the need to come up with decisions that bolster national cohesiveness and support steadfastness of the Palestinian people in the face of the daily attacks by the Israeli occupation and settlers on cities, villages and camps, and the violations by the Israeli government at the city of Jerusalem.
They also stressed the need further strengthen unity among Palestinians, within the framework of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO), the sole and legitimate representative of the Palestinian people.
Abbas officially called for the meeting of Palestinian factions in the wake of the Israeli aggression on Jenin and its refugee camp, which left 13 Palestinians killed and about 100 wounded.
