The Naguib Mahfouz exhibition opened on Tuesday at Al-Hanager Arts Centre in the Opera Square to mark the 111th anniversary of the 1988 Nobel-laureate.
Egypt’s Minister of Culture Nevine Al-Kilany, who inaugurated the event said: “Naguib Mahfouz was an iconic writer who put Egyptian and Arabic literature on a global level.”
“Seminars and workshops on the life of Mahfouz, his work and influence will be held during the next four weeks at various locations nationwide, starting with the 35th Egyptian Writers Conference in New Valley,” the minister added.
Journalist Tariq el-Taher, who is one of the event organisers, a member of the organizing committee of the celebration, said the Culture Palaces Authority and the Cultural Development Fund were among the bodies behind the exhibition, which will include paintings inspired by the writings of Mahfouz, personal documents and memorabilia.
