The ninth air-conditioned underground train set for the third line of the Cairo Metro arrived in the Port of Alexandria on Wednesday.
The delivery is by an agreement between the Egyptian National Authority for Tunnels and South Korean Hyundai Rotem Company, Minister of Transport Kamel el-Wazir said in a statement.
The €317 million (LE6.3 billion) agreement, which was signed in 2019, covers eight years’ rail maintenance and the receipt of ten trains of the 32 trains with technical support provided by Hyundai Rotem.
El-Wazeer said that the arrival of the new trains in succession comes in parallel with the completion of the fourth stage of the third metro line.
The new rolling stock is equipped with CCTV, air conditioning system and LCD screens showing journey information.
The step came in line with directives from President Abdel Fattah el Sisi to upgrade transport sector and improve services.
Four trains have gone into operation so far since the completion of pilot tests on the third line, the minister said.
Eighteen trains currently operate on the third line, which on completion will reduce congestion and save LE250 million ($14.2 million) in running costs of buses.
