Apache Corporation, in co-operation with the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC), has announced a new gas discovery in the Western Desert following the drilling of the SKAL-1X exploratory well in the South Kalabsha area.
This has been the outcome of Egypt’s efforts to increase investment in natural gas and reduce import costs, according to a statement by the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, on Tuesday.
Initial well tests indicate daily production of around 26 million cubic feet of natural gas and approximately 2,700 barrels of condensates, the release added.
The discovery underscores the success of incentives and measures offered by the ministry, which have encouraged Apache to expand exploration activities and increase investments, particularly in new areas adjacent to its existing concessions.
The newly discovered field is located in a recently awarded block near Apache’s current operations, enhancing investment feasibility and reducing costs by leveraging proximity to existing infrastructure and production facilities.
This approach is expected to accelerate development and bring new discoveries online in the shortest possible time, helping to offset the natural decline in output from mature fields while reducing capital expenditures, the ministry stressed.
