CAIRO – Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sweilem said that Egypt cooperates with brothers in the African continent in the field of water by achieving the “Africa 2063” agenda.
In a word while launching a national campaign to preserve water as part of the activities of the seventh Cairo Water Week, the minister underlined the importance of the initiative, saying it does not aim to frighten people but rather raise their awareness about the importance of rationalizing water.
Egypt’s water resources are 55 billion cubic meters, and they will not decrease in any way, but the problem remain in overpopulation, he said, adding that the campaign is being launched in partnership with many institutions, media outlets, and men of religion.
He said Egypt has achieved great success as regards the implementation of the sixth goal of the sustainable development related to water, noting that water consumption per capita in Egypt is not small, it must be reduced by at least 30 or 40%.
He said 70% of Egypt’s water goes to agriculture, 20% to drinking water, and 10% to industry and other uses, underlining the need to raise farmers’ awareness about the importance of rationalizing water, especially in villages.
