CAIRO – Director of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) Project Ayman Heikal on Saturday asserted that the museum’s opening represents a major victory for Egypt and for everyone who contributed to this monumental project.
Heikal described it as a significant step toward preserving Egypt’s heritage and presenting it to the world in a manner befitting its unique cultural value.

Heikal explained that all artifacts transferred to the Grand Egyptian Museum underwent multiple meticulous stages of restoration at the museum’s conservation center. Each piece was thoroughly examined to identify areas of weakness and address any issues, with restorers handling every artifact individually to determine the most suitable treatment method.
He noted that the restoration process varied depending on the condition of each artifact, highlighting that the state-of-the-art conservation center employed advanced restoration techniques to ensure optimal preservation.

Heikal stated that the most significant challenges involved natural materials – such as wood, papyrus, and textiles – which were in fragile condition.
