Egyptian Petroleum Minister Tareq el Mulla said Egypt is planning to develop bylaws concerning methane gas emissions in the petroleum and natural gas sector by the end of 2024.

He underlined the importance of obtaining soft financing within the framework of a recently declared programme for backing efforts and projects to curb methane gas emissions.

He made the remarks during a session on rapidly reducing methane emissions in the petroleum sector that was held as part of the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28).

Mulla expounded that curbing methane emissions is one of the fastest ways to confront global warming, noting that Egypt plans to access the World Bank’s Zero Routine Flaring by 2030 (ZRF) Initiative.

The Initiative is designed to facilitate co-operation between all stakeholders so that solutions to ending routine gas flaring can be identified and implemented. Endorsing governments and oil companies commit to annually reporting their flaring and progress towards the Initiative.
