Egypt’s Social Solidarity Minister Nevin el Qabbag said on Saturday the ministry attaches great importance to elderly people and is keen on offering variable services and developing new initiatives to secure their needs.
She gave the remarks during a meeting with ESCWA Executive Secretary Rola Dashti and the official in charge of elderly people in the organisation Sara Salem.
The meeting tackled the importance of providing utmost family and institutional care to elderly people as well as social protection and economic empowerment.
They also underlined the importance of engaging elderly people in the social and political life and securing safe and subsidised means of transportation to them.
Qabbag said more than 500,000 elderly people benefit from Karama programme and that a number of programs were launched to take good care of them.
She added that a national strategy for elderly people was finalised and efforts are exerted to raise awareness of those offering services to elderly people.
The meeting also tackled the file of handicapped and social researches.
