The Ministry of Environment on Tuesday organised a visit for environmental correspondents to Ashtoum el-Gamil Reserve and Tennis Island in Port Said Governorate to mark World Migratory Bird Day.
The 180-square-kilometre Ashtoum el-Gamil was declared a natural wetland reserve in 1988.
Bird migration is the most important seasonal movement in harmony with nature. Migration follows a north-south flight path between breeding and wintering areas.
Ashtoum el-Gamil Reserve encompasses Boghazi el-Gamil, Lake Manzala and Tennis Island.
Lake Manzala, the largest Delta lake, was once dry land, but flooded as a result of an earthquake in the late 6th century.
