The Egyptian sport scene has witnessed development of sports stadiums and sports infrastructure since President Abdel Fatah El Sisi came to power. Indeed, the Egyptian state has intensified efforts to bring about a sports renaissance.
Since 2014, the New Administrative Capital, Port Said and 6 October City can boast new sports facilities alongside the stadiums and sports cities that have been built nationwide.
Infrastructure
President Sisi directed the preparation of an integrated vision for the development of facilities and infrastructure for sports in Egypt in line with the Egyptian Person Building Strategy to serve Egypt’s youth to develop their talents and exploit their creativity. Egypt has also witnessed a major boom in recent years as a host for major tournaments, largely due to the renewal of infrastructure.
Football stadiums
Cairo International Stadium has witnessed an overhaul, starting with new floodlighting, seating, top quality grass pitch advanced.
At Alexandria Stadium, the camera system, radio, irrigation and changing rooms have been refurbished and upgraded changed. There is a big screen in the stadium and another on the outer wall. Access for spectators has been upgraded.
After expansion, Suez stadium has a capacity of 20,500 spectators. The media centre has also been extended to accommodate 100 media professionals. Some 104 surveillance cameras have been installed and the flood lighting has been replaced, and the racetrack surrounding the stadium has been repainted. In order to ensure the safety of the players, an intensive care room was set up with X-ray and equipment injuries.
Sports halls
The main hall of Cairo Stadium was renovated in 2015 for LE133 million in preparation for the indoor competitions. The seating capacity is 17,000.
The indoor hall in the New Administrative Capital was built specifically for the World Handball Championship 2021. It is located on an area of 10,000 square metres. It is part of the Olympic Village project in the New Administrative Capital, which is being built at a cost of more than LE2.2 billion. The hall has seating for 7,500 spectators.
Borg Al Arab Hall was built for the World Handball Championship at Burg
El-Arab stadium, which is one of the largest stadiums in the African continent with seating capacity of 5000.
The 6 October hall was built to host the Handball World Cup. It has a capacity of 5,200 and a new design of VIP section.
Sports City in the Administrative Capital
Sports City in the Administrative Capital was constructed under the leadership of President Sisi for international tournaments and big-name events.
The Egyptian government has been keen to establish a sports city comparable to its counterpart in Europe, as the 10,000 feddans (acres) facility is one of the important projects implemented in the new administrative capital.
The sports city includes sporting and social clubs and several stadiums. Pitches for football. five-a-side and hockey, and courts for tennis, squash, volleyball and basketball are to be found in this complex, plus Olympic-standard indoor and outdoor swimming pools.
Facilities are available for martial arts and Paralympics.
Culture and technology are housed in another facility to encourage youth to do project work.
Ministry of Youth and Sports efforts
The ministry has investment projects during the period from 2014 to 2021 with 562 youth centres and sports clubs, including playing fields, swimming pools, event halls, shops, gymnasia and cafeterias. Another 235 projects are underway.
Egypt titles in various sports
Egypt’s football National team reached the final of the African Cup of Nations in 2017.
Egypt qualified for the 2018 World Cup, which was held in Russia, after an absence of 28 years, and this was after the victory over Congo.
The Olympic team was also crowned the African Cup of Nations champion for the first time in its history, and qualified for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
Egypt’s youth handball team won the third place and bronze medal in the 22nd World Youth Cup 2019 which was held in Vigo and Pontevedra, Spain.
The Egyptian U-19 handball team won the World Cup for the first time in its history, after defeating the German national team.
