Mashat commends launch of GAFS by G7 1 - Egyptian Gazette

CAIRO – Egyptian Minister of International Co-operation Rania el-Mashat commended the launch of the Global Alliance for Food Security (GAFS) by the G7 countries and the UN Global Crisis Response Group for food, energy and financing.

The alliance and the group aim to deal with and manage the global food shortage to back and boost structures, mechanisms and programmes to mitigate the price hikes of foodstuffs and fuel, in addition to ways of increasing financing following the repercussions of the Russian-Ukrainian crisis and the bad impacts of Covid-19 pandemic, added Mashat while delivering Egypt’s address to the second session of the international conference of the “Union for Global Food Security” via videoconferencing Monday.

The two measures also aim to up supplies of food, fertilisers and fuel and remove obstacles to trade along with offering financial support to mitigate the effects of the bailout, she further mentioned.

The conference is themed ” Coordinating efforts to support global food security.” and held by the German government. The event offers an important opportunity for probing joint efforts to overcome global food security crisis.

The minister underlined the importance of unifying global efforts aimed at promoting multilateral co-operation in food security and provide the sustainable financing for adaptation and mitigation projects against climate change repercussions.

Mashat pointed out to national efforts the state is exerting to boost food security and lay down solutions to handle food price hikes.

She highlighted giant projects the Egyptian government is now carrying out nationwide.

In light of Egypt’s presidency of COP27, the country intends to present its vision on national pledges concerning climate action through the 2050 national plan for climate changes, according to her.
