Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi attended on Sunday the inauguration of the first phase of the country’s first light rail trail (LRT). The LRT links Adly Mansour Interchange Station, the New Administrative Capital (NAC) and the nation’s cities.
Minister of Transport Kamel Wazir said: “Adli Mansour station was implemented in accordance with the highest global standards and specifications, in line with the ministry’s plan to develop transport sector.”
The aim of the three-phase project is to switch into green, sustainable, environment-friendly electric mass transport.
The first stage of the LRT comprises 12 stations, including Adly Mansour, Badr City, Culture and Arts City in the NAC, and New Obour, the minister said.
Upon the completion the LE35 billion LRT, as many as one million commuters will be using the service.
The 1.1 million-square-metre Adly Mansour station will be the largest transport interchange in the Middle East with the Cairo-Suez Railway, Cairo Metro’s third line, the LRT, the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) System, and SuperJet bus service.
The LRT is being constructed by the Ministry of Transport and a consortium of 20 Egyptian companies along with 20 Chinese companies delivering rolling stock and signalling systems.
The project will serve the news communities of Obour, Shorouk, Badr, Mostakbal, 10th Ramadan and the New Administrative Capital.
The French RATP Dev and Chinese Avic will operate the LRT according to the highest European standards.
Ticket prices on the LRT are LE15 for 3 stops, LE20 for 6 stops, LE25 for 6-9 stops and LE35 for 12.
