Egyptian Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad announced on Monday Egypt’s support for the Green Middle East initiative, which was launched by Saudi Arabia.
“Egypt is ready to complete the initiative and link it to efforts connected with desertification, climate change and biodiversity,” Fouad said while addressing the 19th ministerial meeting of the Regional Organization for the Conservation of the Environment of the Red Sea & Gulf of Aden (PERSGA), which is virtually held under the chairmanship of Djibouti.
The minister stressed the importance of cooperation among the PERSGA member states in order to preserve environment and biodiversity.
She also expressed Egypt’s readiness to participate in an awareness campaign aimed to preserve the marine environment in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden to raise environmental awareness among all age groups, especially youth and children, about the importance of maintaining marine life.
The minister called on the private sector and civil society to take part in this campaign.
Fouad also made a proposal to place a special focus on the issue of climate change and its effects on the marine environment, saying that coral reefs in the Red Sea region are badly affected by climate change.
