Minister of  Environment Yasmeen Fouad Wednesday met Japanese Ambassador to Cairo Nuki Masaki to discuss ministry efforts to limit the use of single-use plastic bags.

The minister hailed the co-operation with the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) over the last 20 years in the field of environment.

The minister went on to refer to the Japanese-backed project to promote recycling with the support of the Japanese aid and implemented by

The $3 million project is being implemented with the cooperation of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) over three years.

The Ministry of Trade and Industry, the Plastics Technology Centre and the Chamber of  Industries are also collaborating on the project.

“The ministry has worked hard to raise awareness of limiting the use of plastic bags,” Fouad said.

“There were special campaigns in Hurghada and the Zamalek district of Cairo with the participation of certain stores,” she added.

Financial support was granted within the framework of the presidential initiative ‘Get Ready for Green’,” she said.

Successful experiments to cut down the use of plastic and encourage recycling have been carried out in Cairo’s Manshiyet Nasser district.
