Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mohamed Shaker on Sunday opened the 15th Arab Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy, Aswan.

The conference ends on December 16. Hosting the conference, under sponsorship of Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli, is in line with the interest of Egypt’s political leadership in expanding the peaceful uses of atomic power and following up
the implementation of the nuclear plants,
a ministry statement said on Sunday.

Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Abul-Gheit, Aswan Governor Ashraf Attya, Director-General of the Arab Atomic Energy Agency (AAEA) Salem Hamdi and chairman of the Egyptian Atomic Energy Authority (EAEA) Amr El-Hajj attended the opening session.

The Aswan event is one of a series of scientific conferences organised by AAEA to look into ideas and innovation in research and its application to peaceful purposes of atomic energy and adapting it to support development in the Arab World.

Shaker referred to maximising the role and application of nuclear sciences for building the Arab economy and supporting social services in line with the relevant global developments, and the Arab strategy included in the Arab League resolutions.

Shaker pointed to achievements by Egypt in this field, such as securing the needs of the local market for medical radioactive isotopes even though aviation and shipping were at a standstill during the pandemic.
