Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation al-Sayed al-Quseir on Thursday met with senior officials from the Egyptian-American vaccines company, MEVAC, to discuss co-operation.
Al-Quseir briefed company officials on government efforts to develop the veterinary vaccines sector, which “Egypt is keen to expand”.
“The biological safety and protection of livestock are crucial,” al-Quseir said, adding that animal vaccines are important for increasing Egyptian exports.
Al-Quseir said his ministry spares no effort in supporting investments in all fields, especially in the production of veterinary vaccines and serums.
Egypt’s political leadership always lays stress on the need to support the production of these vaccines and serums for the domestic market and for export, the minister said.
Egypt is home to one of the largest farms producing eggs free from pathogens, he said, adding that this is the only farm of its kind in the Arab and African regions.
He instructed ministry officials to study the mechanisms, challenges and action plans required to pushing veterinary vaccine production forward.
Al-Quseir also listened to a presentation on co-operation with MEVAC, including measures taken by the company to enhance this co-operation.
MEFAC was established in 2007 and succeeded in making significant progress in animal vaccine manufacture.
The company’s exports are worth more than LE900 million ($56.2 million) and its total sales on the local market amount LE500 million ($31.2 million).
MEVAC officials said they are keen to co-operate further with the Ministry of Agriculture and increase the volume of their investments in Egypt.
