CAIRO – Egyptian President of the Supreme Council for Media Regulation (SCMR) Karam Gaber asserted Egypt has exerted strenuous efforts, especially in the last hours of the UN climate change conference (COP27), held in Sharm El Sheikh, to reach a consensus among participants and come up with a concluding statement meeting the aspirations of African and developing countries.
Egypt was not speaking about itself in the conference, but it has been the “voice of Africa and developing states” in the climate gathering, Gaber said in statements to CBC satellite channel.
He said rich countries did not want to make some pledges in climate action, which, he added was a point of disagreement between developing and developed states.
Egyptian efforts, however, have mainly contributed to reaching an agreement of viewpoints by announcing the establishment of the loss and damage fund for climate action and its financing mechanism, Gaber pointed out.
Meanwhile, Gaber said an upcoming Arab-Chinese summit in Riyadh is very important, adding that the volume of trade exchange between China and Arab countries hit nearly 300 billion dollars.
The summit offers an opportunity for probing ways of boosting vistas of Arab-Chinese cooperation, according to him.
There is an agreement that China will become an active partner in regional issues and will play a crucial role in providing food security for the Arab region, he said.
