Egypt’s Minister of Social Solidarity, Neveenel-Kabbaj, reviewed the results of a 16-day campaign to fight violence against girls and women launched by her ministry under the slogan ‘Grab the tip of the thread’.
The meeting was held in Asmarat, a residential compound constructed by the government and used for the relocation of slum dwellers in different areas in Cairo.
Attending the meeting were some residents of the compound, along with United Nations Development Programme Resident Representative, Alessandro Fracassetti, and Head of the European Union Delegation to Egypt, Marco Migliorelli.
The minister toured the Reception and Rehabilitation Centre in the compound and an arts fair held in it.
The fair contained the works and drawings of the children of the compound. The children succeeded in developing these works after attending drawing education workshops at the centre within the Awareness for Community Development Programme which was implemented cooperation with artist AzzaFakhry.
Minister el-Kabbaj expressed joy with the participation of national and international bodies in the 16-day campaign to fight violence against women.
The campaign, she said, aimed to protect women from violence and empower them economically.
She explained that her ministry works to support family unity and integration.
Minister el-Kabbaj said state authorities would work to eliminate violence and discrimination against women and give them access into decision-making.
“Violence has to be stopped and women have to be empowered,” the minister said.
She added that her ministry would not give up and would work to provide social and economic opportunities to get women out of poverty.
