June 30: The day Egyptians chose the future

The revolution’s anniversary comes this year as Egypt continues its march for rebuilding and creating a brilliant future for its people, defying all challenges on the way

As June 30 dawns once more, Egyptians pause to reflect on a day etched permanently into their national consciousness.

This day 12 years ago, millions of people took to the streets in an unparalleled display of unity to reaffirm Egypt’s identity and chart a new course for its future.

This was a pivotal moment, during which the patience of this great nation gave way to a powerful roar to declare that Egypt would not be hijacked, its destiny not to be manipulated.

The glorious June 30 Revolution was more than just a political upheaval. It was a profound declaration of the Egyptian people’s will.

An indelible memory 2 - Egyptian Gazette

Egyptians opted for a modern and a secular state rooted in a tolerant identity and is open to the world. They aspired to live a state that does not impose a narrow ideological agenda on its people or on neighbouring countries.

As they marched on the streets, Egyptians seemed to carry a banner that read: “Egypt is for all Egyptians. This is a state whose destiny will be decided only its loyal citizens”.

The 12 years that passed since June 30 of 2013 have provided an undeniable proof of the revolution’s foresight and necessity.

As we observe the tragic realities unfolding in regional countries: nation-states fractured; populations displaced; institutions crumbling, and societies embroiled in civil wars and foreign interventions, Egypt stands as a testament to the wisdom of its people’s uprising.

The bold decision of the courageous leadership of the Egyptian Armed Forces to take sides with the people thwarted a major conspiracy that was being concocted at the time.

This conspiracy, rooted in an alliance between some internal and foreign forces, aimed to plunge Egypt into irreversible chaos, tamper with its fate, and divide its resilient people.

However, the awareness and deeply rooted patriotism of the Egyptian people, coupled with the military’s decisive response, gave these conspirators no quarter.

A resolute confrontation against the terrorism they sought to spread, aided by external powers, firmly placed Egypt back on the right path.

Since that momentous day, Egypt has diligently focused on rebuilding its institutions, restoring political and security stability, and laying down a robust infrastructure.

This sustained effort has cultivated a resilient economy, capable of withstanding unprecedented global and regional challenges.

Over the past six years alone, Egypt has navigated the severe economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the far-reaching effects of successive geopolitical crises like the Russian-Ukrainian war, the conflict in Gaza, and current regional instability.

Despite immense pressures as far as development finance, global trade, and international markets were concerned, Egypt not only confronted these headwinds but also steadfastly upheld its regional responsibilities.

Egypt continues to champion the causes of the Arab nation, and above all, protect its territories, borders, and the resources of its people, equipping itself with the tools to deter those with ill intents.

The spirit of June 30 remains our compass, a beacon of resilience, inspiring Egyptians to confront current challenges.

We remember the tremendous sacrifices of our heroes – the righteous martyrs from the Armed Forces and Police – who gave their lives for the precious blessing of our homeland.

These people’s legacy underscores that the battle of awareness is still going on.

It is imperative to consistently clarify facts and counter misinformation and conspiracies, particularly those targeting the minds of our youth.

Our country is on the right path, guided by a solid national will focused solely on the public interest of achieving a decent life and a safe future for all.

Egypt has overcome countless difficulties throughout its ancient history, and it will undoubtedly surmount the current global crises and their local repercussions.

The Egyptians will also continue their unwavering march for building an advanced state, a secure homeland, and the stable and the vibrant society they all aspire to live in.
