Steps for the joint production of an Arab electric car must be completed before the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
This statement by Arab Organisation for Industrialisation (AOI) chairman Mokhtar Abdel Latif came during meetings of the higher committee of integrated industrial partnership which was held according to directives from the political leaderships of the committee’s member states (Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan and UAE).
Abdel Latif also underlined the importance of putting into effect directives from President Abdel Fattah El Sisi on strengthening co-operation with Arab countries and capitalising on their national industrial potentials in order to localise technology and enhance local industry with a view to eventual Arab industrial integration and reducing imports.
Discussions focused on localising Arab electric car production using local components available in the committee’s member states.
The first locally manufactured electric vehicle (EV) prototype was produced by the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT).
EV manufacturing is expected to begin within five months, AASTMT dean Mohamed El-Ghamry said in recent press statements.
Sixty per cent of components for the EV will made locally made, el-Ghamry said, adding that there are plan to raise local component content to 90 per cent within by 2025 thanks to AASTMT research.
“As for producing an Egyptian EV, foreign companies have expressed willingness to make partnerships to set up a factory to produce electric car batteries and to manufacture engines locally,” el-Ghamry said.
The EV with a maximum speed 60 km/h will be an alternative to the tuktuk and the government should exempt all production components for the EV of customs duty, he said.
During the 4th World Youth Forum in 2022, President Sisi announced that Egypt would produce its first EV in 2023 as part of government plans to transition to a green economy.
