Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sweilam emphasized Egypt’s keenness to continue cooperation with the sisterly country of Sudan in all fields, especially in the water domain.
He made the remarks during a meeting with his Sudanese counterpart Ismat Qureshi.
The two sides exchanged views and reached consensus on several issues related to the Nile River, with the aim of preserving the rights and interests of both countries.
They also discussed the Ethiopian dam issue and affirmed the necessity of full adherence to the rules of international water law.
During the meeting, the two sides stressed the importance of abiding by the Nile Basin Initiative which is the comprehensive framework for the Nile Basin countries.
They also emphasized the importance of preserving and supporting the current consultative mechanism as the sole path toward restoring consensus and inclusiveness among all basin countries.
The meeting also included a review of the work and activities of the Joint Permanent Technical Committee on Nile Water between Egypt and Sudan, which witnessed a high level of coordination between the two sides during the past period, especially with the formation of technical teams from both countries.
Both sides asserted the continuation of daily coordination and communication between the Egyptian and Sudanese parties regarding monitoring the river’s hydrology, operation of dams on the Nile River in both countries, and the operation and maintenance of measuring stations and water quality, to maximize the benefit from the water resources of both countries and achieve optimal management of the river’s water.
For his part, the Sudanese minister highlighted the strong relations binding the two brotherly peoples, underlining commitment to enhancing joint cooperation between Egypt and Sudan.
