CAIRO – Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilam held a meeting with senior ministry officials to review progress in the development and modernization of the national waterway cleaning system.
During the meeting, Sewilam highlighted the ministry’s ongoing efforts to clear the Nile River, canals, and drainage networks of various types of weeds, including water hyacinth, as well as accumulated debris.
He noted that comprehensive measures implemented to clean the waterways have significantly improved the management of invasive vegetation and waste.
A digital monitoring system has been established to track the cleaning operations of canals and drains, with the aim of enhancing the use of modern technologies and digital tools in water system management.
The system has been integrated with data on cleaning contracts and work orders issued from fiscal year 2022/2023 through to the current year.
Also, a performance evaluation mechanism was developed to assess the efficiency of irrigation and drainage departments, as well as the contractors responsible for implementing the cleaning operations.
An application was also launched using the Google Earth Engine platform to enable periodic satellite-based monitoring of water hyacinth and other aquatic weeds along the Nile River and major canals.
