DUBAI – Egyptian Minister of Irrigation Hani Suweilam discussed with Deputy Director-General at the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) Maria Helena means to boost co-operation between the Ministry of Irrigation and the FAO in the field of water in addition to joint coordination during international events and initiatives related to water.
The meeting tackled the FAO role in supporting “AWARE” initiative which aims at implementing projects in the developing countries especially the African countries in the field of adapting with climate change and working on building the abilities of the specialists in the field of water via Pan-African Center for Water Climate Adaptation that was launched under this initiative.
Suweilam asserted that the FAO is a strategic partner for the ministry in a number of international events including Cairo Water Week and the water event held as part of the climate conferences.
He lauded the role of the organization as a partner implementing a project for modernizing irrigation techniques to improve the standards of living of small farmers in Upper Egypt in partnership with the Dutch government.
The project aims at upgrading the irrigation systems, boosting water productivity and supporting small farmers.
The project also integrates with the strategy of the ministry which includes changing into modern irrigation systems in sand lands, sugarcane farms and orchards.
