CAIRO- The Information and Decision Support Centre (IDSC) affirmed that transitioning the global vehicle fleet to zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) technologies is crucial to decarbonising road transport and meeting climate goals.
At the global level, the transport sector emits about 12 gigatons of carbon dioxide per year, representing about 25% of greenhouse gases, according to a report prepared by IDSC to analyse the role of the climate goals in reshaping the automotive sector.
Demand for passenger transport is projected to grow in all world regions within the upcoming decades, the report said.
Consequently, the emissions are expected to grow by about 21 gigatons of carbon dioxide by 2050, in case strict measures are not taken to reduce emissions, according to the report.
The IDSC, meanwhile, quoted a a report by the UN as saying that the worldwide fleet of private cars is projected to triple by 2050, resulting in an increase in carbon pollution.
