The Egyptian Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities Assem el-Gazar held a meeting on Wednesday with the ministry’s officials to follow up on the implementation status of “Julius Nyerere” Hydropower plant and dam in Tanzania.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the consortium carrying out the project.
In a statement, Gazar affirmed the project is regularly followed up by President Abdel Fattah El Sisi as part of distinguished relations between the two countries.
Egypt is very interested in boosting relations with African brothers, he said, adding the measure reflects Egyptian companies’ capability of carrying out giant projects in Egypt and abroad; to achieve the dream of the Tanzanian brothers in implementing this project to generate hydroelectric power and achieve required development.
The minister said the project aims at the construction of a dam with total length 1025m at crest level and 131m height, it has 7 water exits, its capacity is 34 billion m3 approximately, besides, the construction of a hydropower plant with a capacity of 2115mw.
He said the project components being implemented include: (the main dam – hydropower generation plant and intakes works – 3 tunnels to transfer the water to the power plant – interconnecting electric power grids – 4 saddle dams for reservoir impounding of water – a permanent concrete bridge on Rufiji.
