Since the era of the ancient Egyptians, history has drawn attention to the successful management of the Nile River and the rationalization of the consumption of its water, said Egypt’s Agriculture and Land Reclamation Minister Hani Sewilam.
This came during a celebration organized Sunday by the Water Resources and Irrigation Ministry in co-operation with the European Union on the occasion of World Water Day.
The celebration was attended by EU Ambassador to Egypt Christian Berger, Spanish Ambassador to Egypt Alvaro Iranzo, Belgium’s Ambassador to Egypt Francois Cornet, Czech Ambassador to Egypt Ivan Jukl and Cypriot Ambassador to Egypt Polly Ioannou.
Delivering a speech during the celebration, Sewilam said that the annual celebration reflects the importance of Egypt’s interest in ensuring the right for every person to access clean water.
The climate change represents a major challenge in water management, he further said.
Egypt is taking several steps in confronting several challenges, he said, noting that the per capita share of water in Egypt nears 500 cubic meters per year.
Egypt is one of the driest countries in the world, he went on to say.
For his part, the EU ambassador to Egypt said that water is of great importance for all forms of life on the planet.
There are several challenges besetting the water sector around the world, he added.
Today’s celebration represents a perfect opportunity to discuss the future steps that should be taken to promote such cooperation, he noted.
World Water Day, held on March 22 every year since 1993, celebrates water and raises awareness of the 2 billion people living without access to safe water.
