Egypt’s Ministry of Transport announced on Wednesday the launch of the first phase of the East Nile Monorail, marking a major milestone in the country’s mass transit system.
The newly operational segment runs from El-Mosheer Tantawy Station to El-Adala Station in the New Administrative Capital.
On the first day of service, Transport Minister Kamel El-Wazir rode the monorail from Investors Station in New Cairo to the Government District Station in the New Administrative Capital, accompanied by National Authority for Tunnels Chairman Tarek Goueili.
At Investors Station, passengers were welcomed with flowers as services commenced. The minister inspected ticketing services, personally purchasing a ticket and testing electronic gates.
He stressed the importance of facilitating passengers and promoting multiple payment options, including cash, bank cards and e-wallets.
El-Wazir also highlighted safety measures, including platform screen doors that open only upon train arrival.
During the journey, he met passengers who praised the monorail as a modern, air-conditioned and efficient mode of transport.
The minister congratulated Egyptians on the project’s launch, describing it as a significant leap in sustainable, eco-friendly mass transit.
He noted that the monorail reduces fuel consumption, lowers emissions and traffic congestion, and encourages a shift away from private car use.
It is worth noting that the first phase connects key residential areas and major landmarks in New Cairo and the New Administrative Capital, with integration to the Light Rail Transit (LRT) system.
A second phase extending to Nasr City is expected to open next month.
