Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat met on Friday a delegation from a consortium comprising Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar), Infinity Power, and Hassan Allam Construction.

The meeting came in line with the Ministry of Electricity’s action plan to diversify energy sources, expand renewable energy projects, and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

The minister reviewed work progress done to date in the projects being implemented by the consortium to generate electricity from solar and wind energy.

He issued directives to accelerate the execution of renewable energy projects currently underway in the Benban and Gulf of Suez regions, ensuring their integration into the unified electrical grid.

Minister Esmat stressed that his ministry is keen to enhance partnerships with regional and global power entities. He also affirmed the importance of expediting the implementation of agreements to produce electricity from solar energy with a total capacity of 1,200 megawatts, complemented by battery storage systems with a total capacity of 720 megawatts.

The goal is to connect these projects to the grid and commence operations within the current year, in line with the state’s vision to maximise the role of renewable energy, increase its share in the energy mix, and expand its projects as part of the energy transition strategy.

Esmat further noted that the new energy strategy aims to scale up the contribution of renewables to the energy mix to 60 per cent by 2040.

The recently-approved strategy focused on increasing reliance on renewable energy sources, rationalising the use of traditional energy and reducing dependence on fossil fuels to cut carbon emissions and foster the transition to green economy, the minister added.
