Egypt’s Minister of Social Solidarity Nevine el-Qabbag flew off to the German capital Berlin on Sunday for the Global Forum on Adaptive Social Protection, slated for 13-15 June.
The minister’s participation in the forum came in response to an invitation from World Bank Vice President for Human Development Mamta Murthi and Svenja Schulze, German Federal Minister for Economic Co-operation and Development.
The minister will be taking part in the plenary session of the forum, themed ‘Social Protection Systems — Towards Adaptation, Resilience and Transformation for Economic Empowerment’.
The minister will review efforts in expanding social protection networks with a view to improving living standards.
The minister will also be speaking about the conditional cash support programme ‘Takaful and Karama’, the broadest financial support programme, from which 20 per cent of the population now benefits.
During the forum, the minister will also review the experiences of economic empowerment of poor families and vulnerable groups to qualify them for the labour market in various activities.
El-Qabbag will discuss government development efforts regarding infrastructure and skills, as well as experience in dealing with multi-dimensional poverty by providing basic services in poor villages under the presidential rural development initiative Decent life, which includes improvements in health, education, access to clean water, utilities and communications networks.
The Global Forum is hosted by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Co-operation and Development (BMZ) and the World Bank (WB) and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).
