Egypt’s Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) Lieutenant General Osama Rabie announced the beginning of a new phase in restoring normal traffic through the canal.
The Suez Canal witnessed the southbound transit of the giant container ship CMA CGM OSIRIS, carrying a total load of 154,000 tonnes. The vessel was en route from Singapore to Alexandria.
This marks the first giant container ship from the French shipping line CMA CGM to transit Suez Canal from Bab El-Mandeb Strait since March 2024, following a temporary halt due to regional challenges.
The vessel’s passage reflects the success of the recent SCA’s marketing efforts, particularly after the announcement of a 15 per cent discount for container ships with a net tonnage exceeding 130,000 tonnes, whether laden or empty. The incentive, valid for three months, was detailed in Circular No. 3/2025.
Chairman Rabie noted that CMA CGM currently leads all global shipping lines in terms of both vessel numbers and total tonnage transiting the canal in the first half of 2025. This, he added, underscores the strong strategic partnership between the SCA and the French shipping group.
