Extensive training underway for tour professionals ahead of the Grand Egyptian Museum’s grand opening
In anticipation of its official inauguration on July 3rd, the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is conducting a comprehensive training program for tour guides. Curators are meticulously preparing these cultural ambassadors with in-depth knowledge of the museum’s vast collection and its principal galleries.
Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathy emphasized that this initiative aims to equip tour guides with the necessary expertise to eloquently convey the richness and diversity of ancient Egyptian civilization, as showcased by the artifacts spanning various historical eras within the GEM. The program, according to the minister, will empower guides to present information to tourists in an engaging and seamless manner.
CEO of the GEM Authority, Ahmed Ghoneim, detailed the structure of the program, which is being held three days a week throughout April and May, accommodating an average of 60 tour guides daily. He also provided a registration link (https://forms.office.com/r/4Jr8nymfNm) for guides wishing to participate.
The GEM has already undergone a soft opening in November 2023 and a trial run in October 2024, revealing key areas such as its gardens, cafés, the hanging obelisk, the atrium, the grand staircase, and its initial 12 exhibition halls. Ultimately, the museum will house over 100,000 artifacts, with approximately 50,000 already safely relocated.
Strategically located near the recently opened Sphinx International Airport and boasting panoramic views of the Giza Pyramids, the GEM is poised to become the world’s largest museum dedicated to a single civilization – the magnificent world of ancient Egypt. This training program underscores the museum’s commitment to providing visitors with an enriching and informative experience from the moment it officially opens its doors.
