MPs Assem El-Gazzar and Mohamed El-Wahsh were elected deputy speakers of the House of Representatives for the third legislative term (2026–2031).

Speaker of the House Hisham Badawy announced the results during the opening session of the first ordinary session of the third legislative term, held on Monday at the House’s headquarters in the New Capital.

Gazzar secured 516 votes, while Wahsh garnered 495 votes. MP Sahar Othman received 87 votes, MP Islam Fawzy 35 votes, and MP Awad Abu El-Naga 21 votes. A total of 579 MPs cast their ballots, with 577 valid votes and two invalid ballots.

Gazzar, former minister of housing and current chairman of the General Organization for Physical Planning, is an urban and environmental planner with a multidisciplinary technical background and extensive experience in planning and implementing strategic development programs, including tourism, environmental, urban, service and real estate projects. He earned a bachelor’s degree in regional and urban planning from Cairo University in 1990 and a PhD from the same university in 2006.

Wahsh holds a bachelor’s degree in medicine and surgery from Al-Azhar University. He began his career as an assistant lecturer at Al-Azhar University Hospital, then completed postgraduate studies, earning a master’s degree and registering for a doctorate before receiving a scholarship abroad to specialize in liver surgery and transplantation at the University of London.

He holds a master’s degree in general surgery from Al-Azhar University, a PhD in minimally invasive gastrointestinal surgery from the University of Strasbourg in France, and another PhD in liver surgery and transplantation from the University of London, becoming the first Egyptian and Arab to obtain a doctorate in this highly specialized field. He has also served as a consultant to the World Health Organization and as a medical and scientific adviser to the Tahya Misr Fund.
