PARIS — French Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pascal Confavreux has confirmed that Egypt played a pivotal role in brokering the recent agreement between the United States and Iran.
Speaking in an interview with the Al-Qahera News channel on Monday, the spokesperson stressed that Egyptian-French relations are currently at an all-time high. He noted that France’s hosting of the G7 Summit, attended by President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, will provide a platform to address both the Iranian nuclear file and broader Middle East dynamics.
Mr Confavreux added that the breakthrough between Washington and Tehran serves as a positive indicator, underscoring the need for all regional and international stakeholders to solidify the accord and ensure its tangible implementation on the ground.
He also highlighted that the Iranian dossier and maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz are at the forefront of the G7 Summit’s agenda. He stressed that the strait must remain open, fee-free, and unrestricted to ensure the full restoration of international navigation and maritime transit.
The spokesperson concluded by stating that the US-Iran agreement must extend its positive implications to Lebanon, urging both Israel and Hezbollah to halt reciprocal attacks.
