CAIRO – Egyptian Minister of Environment Yasmin Fouad has praised the European Union’s decision to place the climate action agenda on top of its priorities especially with the need to accelerate all executive measures to counter the impact of climate change on humans.
The minister’s remarks were made during her meeting with European Commission Executive Vice-President for the European Green Deal Frans Timmermans and his accompanying delegation, currently visiting here.
EU Ambassador in Cairo Christian Berger attended the meeting.
The meeting took up mechanisms for boosting joint cooperation to support the roadmap for hosting the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP27) to the UNFCCC that will take place in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, from November 7 to 18.
During the meeting, Fouad asserted that the conference will seek to guarantee achieving more progress after the outcome of COP26 especially the financial pledges made by the developed countries to help the developing ones finance climate programs.
She said COP27 is considered a conference for implementation after the issuing of a book titled “The Implementation of Paris Agreement on Climate Change”, adding that Sharm El Sheikh conference will display success stores and pioneering projects which have been implemented as regards climate action worldwide.
The EU Green Deal official, for his part, praised the role of the Egyptian minister during COP26 held in Glasgow and voiced readiness to co-operate with Egypt in preparing for COP27.
He also made it clear that the EU is working on a plan to diversify the sources of energy and accelerate the transformation to renewable energy sources such as solar and wind energies.
