Minya -The Egyptian Interior Ministry organized on Monday a visit by a delegation grouping representatives of rights organizations and foreign media outlets to New Minya Prisons area to check on conditions of inmates.
The visit is the sixth of its kind by rights organizations and foreign media representatives following similar visits to Tora Prison Complex, Wadi el Natroun Prison, Fayyoum Prison, Borg el Arab Prison and El Marg Prison.
The visit aims at checking vocational training programs of prisoners to help them earn money in a decent way after getting out of prison.
Speaking on the sidelines of the visit, Assistant Interior Minister for the Prisons Sector Tarek Marzouq said the visit, that comes in implementation of the directives of Interior Minister Mahmoud Tawfiq, aims at updating rights organizations and foreign media on conditions of prisoners, nutrition, and appropriate care provided to them.
The delegation toured different areas and inspected utilities of the prison, including workshops and the playground, mosque, kitchen, bakery, library, hospital and visitation area.
They also checked the implementation of precautionary measures to contain the spread of coronavirus, including wearing of face masks and social distancing.
The visit comes as part of the Interior Ministry’s efforts to dissipate misleading reports circulated by forces of evil on the human rights of prisoners and the way prisoners are being treated in jails.
