Egyptian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid stated on Thursday that in the context of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ monitoring of the situation of Egyptian students in Kyrgyzstan following the recent altercations and assaults they were involved in, the Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Kazakhstan, which undertakes non-resident representation in Kyrgyzstan, successfully contained and completely resolved the crisis involving the Egyptian students, indicating that all necessary procedures for the release of the detained students were completed and they were escorted to their residence.
The official spokesperson added that, in the context of overcoming the academic obstacles that students may face and addressing any negative and psychological impacts resulting from the incident, the consular mission sent to Kyrgyzstan met with the president of IMU University, where over 530 Egyptian students are enrolled. The mission succeeded in facilitating and resolving most of the academic problems faced by the students. The university president agreed to move up the exam dates for those who wish to return to Egypt early, he added.
Moreover, first-year students were allowed to leave, with the commitment to return to take their exams after the summer break to mitigate the negative psychological effects on the students, he explained.
Furthermore, Ambassador Abu Zeid explained that the head of the consular mission sent to Bishkek held an extensive meeting with prominent members of the Egyptian community and several students in Kyrgyzstan to assess their consular needs, evaluate the situation, and discuss ways to prevent the recurrence of such incidents and ensure the safety of our students in Kyrgyzstan.
During the meeting, a virtual session was held with Egyptian students residing in different areas of Kyrgyzstan to reassure them and check on their conditions and safety.
Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry had directed the dispatch of a consular mission to the Kyrgyz capital, Bishkek, immediately after the events unfolded, to check on our students and ensure their stability, as well as to help preserve their rights and provide protection for them.
